Meet Sarah

Greetings! I'm Sarah, and my life's work revolves around teaching and learning. I'm incredibly passionate about this field, and I strive to share my enthusiasm with as many people as possible. My belief is that education is a lifelong journey that extends beyond the classroom or any degree.

With over two decades of experience in PreK-12 and higher education, I've acquired valuable insights into how our brains operate and learn. I leverage this knowledge to assist my fellow educators and administrators in enhancing their teaching techniques and strategies.

However, my mission is not just limited to imparting knowledge; I'm equally committed to creating an equitable learning environment for all. I'm determined to combat the systemic racism that still exists in our education system. As educators, it's our responsibility to keep evolving and improving our methods to ensure that everyone has an equitable opportunity to succeed.

Professional Development

Meaningful professional development is so important for music educators, yet we are often at the mercy of district professional development that doesn’t address our specific needs. I can work with you and your department, or district, to create meaningful professional development experiences that are catered specifically toward your needs.

Here are some possible topics that we can explore. If you don’t see something on this list, let me know and we can make it work!

  • Exploring equity, diversity, inclusion, accesses, and belonging in the music classroom.
  • Ethical song research for the instrumental music educator.
  • Implementing culturally sustaining practices in the music classroom.
  • Navigating current trends in music education.

Curriculum Design

Curriculum design or curriculum review can be a daunting task for any educator, let alone the music educator who has over a hundred students, runs pep band, has marching shows, spring festivals, elementary musicals, and the list goes on and on. This is where I can come in and take the load off you and your music colleagues.

Some possible scenarios that I could assist you and your team:

  • Digging through your curriculum map and identifying any holes or missing parts. I can bring my findings back and work with your department to address those deficits.
  • Helping your department navigate standards and how your curriculum reflects the standards.
  • Working with your department on the resources that are used in class and identifying what might be out of date and what could replace the out of date materials.
  • Perhaps you are teaching a new class and don’t know where to start. I can help you write your curriculum.

Is there something else on here that you would like to explore? Please reach out and let’s chat!

Workshops

What can we do today that you can take back to your classroom on Monday? What new skills are you trying to improve or are curious to explore? Here are some past workshops I’ve given:

  • Creating and composing in the instrumental music classroom.
  • Assessment strategies in music classrooms.
  • Songwriting in guitar classes.
  • Exploring technology and starting a sound production course.
  • Using student folksongs to empower beginning instrumental music students.
  • Using higher order questioning strategies to empower student learning and understanding.

Let me know if you would like to pursue something that is not on this list. If I am unable to offer that workshop, I will find someone who is!
